The first 50 miles of the coast are known as Maine’s Southern Coast Region and are comprised of Kittery, York, Ogunquit, Kennebunk, Kennebunkport, Arundel, Biddeford, Saco, Old Orchard Beach, and Portland. There is every kind of beach you can imagine. There are shallow little coves made by sand bars and tidal pools for exploring that are perfect for small children. There are beaches with live music and cool drinks steps from the sand if that is your thing. There are beaches with large, rolling waves perfect for surfing or boogie boarding. And there are tiny, quiet beaches that seem like you have discovered a secret. Come and visit them all!
Southern Maine is so easy to get to with its international airport in Portland and easy access from Boston, it is perfect for a quick getaway or longer vacation with kids. History, amusement parks, outdoor recreation, outlet shopping, world-class beaches, and world-famous cuisine all come together in this stretch of coastline. There is something for everyone.
Both Kittery and Freeport are towns with outlet shopping with famous brand outlet shops. Kittery also features the popular Kittery Trading Post and Freeport boasts the LL Bean’s flagship store, open 24 hours and 365 days a year.
Ogunquit, the Algonquin word for “Beautiful Place By the Sea” has The Marginal Way, a spectacular walkway along the ocean, 3 miles of near-perfect beach, and Perkin’s Cove, a busy working lobster and fishing village that also features restaurants, shops, and art galleries.
Nearby Wells has the most antique shops in all of Maine -- now that’s saying something!
Biddeford, Saco, and Old Orchard Beach, feature beaches, breweries, boutiques, and a variety of amusements. Of course, Old Orchard Beach is best known as Palace Playland and The Pier, jutting 500’ out into the Atlantic.
Portland, Maine’s largest city and voted the Restaurant City of the Year in 2018 by Bon Appetit for a reason. From the flakiest croissants to the savoriest Bahn mi, you won’t find a better time to visit Portland. Add the most diverse number of craft-style breweries to the mix and you will have a hard time choosing. There are Jewish delis, sushi bars, Spanish tapas, Vietnamese street food, and Middle Eastern-inspired comfort food. All of that in one neighborhood. Of course, there are seafood restaurants, the best roman pizza, and so many delicious bakeries and the best burger joints, you will just have to add them to your list for your next visit.
